Haxby United >> SEASON 2012 / 2013

Season Review

After struggling through last season, the club was determined to turn the club around and start building for the future. We secured sponsors for our 3 new kits for which we owe a massive thank-you to the Parvin Restuarant the Coppergate Centre and Crew Hairdressing. Also, to Paul Waddington Flooring who have supported this club for many years and who kindly supplied the whole squad with training jackets. The committee underwent some changes, Chris Watkinson returned to his role as Chairman, Jason Bailey took on the Treasurer role, Dale Waddington was back on the board along with Dave Pugh.

Pre-season training started early and this helped us get lots of new players involved many of which were stepping up from the Haxby junior ranks, a good number would be playing for both the U19s and the senior team. Steve Nicholson carried on as First team manager assisted by Dale Waddington with Chris Watkinson continuing as Reserve team boss, assisted by Dave Pugh.

We had two new sides so it was never going to be easy this season but a good start from both teams gave us confidence. The First team though struggled after their promising start. Despite often playing the better football, the goals never came and we got into the losing habit, conceding goals in bunches that put games beyond us. That said however, we were playing with a very young team; often up to 5 of the 11 were U19 regulars. Highlights included a great home win against promotion hopefuls St Clements and a superb performance against Premier league side Hamilton Panthers who narrowly knocked us out of the Senior Cup. It wasn't enough though as we finished second from bottom, getting relegated once again with Wilberfoss.

The Reserves also had a number of young players, and a huge squad to pick from which meant there was a lot of rotation as the season wore on. We took a couple of drubbings, but this was expected as we were the only team in the league without a Premier league first team, but managed a few very important wins including arguably the performance of the season against Copmanthorpe. Disappointingly we were knocked out of the Reserve Cup in the first round but surviving for another season in the top Reserve league is a great achievement.

Off the field the club, with the help of its players, committee and sponsors, is in the best shape for years. The First XI finished 10th in Division 1, the Reserves finished 8th in Reserve A.
